Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest times of the year on the water. Before you head out for one last summer adventure, take a few minutes to make safety your top priority.

• Wear a life jacket — Make sure everyone aboard has a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

• Check the weather — Conditions can change quickly. Know the forecast and be prepared to head back to shore.

•  Boat sober — Alcohol and boating don't mix. Designate a sober operator.

•  File a float plan — Tell someone where you're going, who is aboard and when you expect to return.

• Check your boat — Inspect your fuel, battery, lights, communications equipment and safety gear before leaving the dock.

• Know the rules — Maintain a proper lookout, operate at a safe speed and understand the navigation rules.

• Be prepared for an emergency — Carry reliable communication and signaling equipment, and make sure your engine cutoff switch is working.
