NOAA Charts

NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey is the nation’s chartmaker, with over a thousand charts covering 95,000 miles of shoreline and 3.4 million square nautical miles of waters within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. Here’s a quick overview of the nautical charts that NOAA produces.

Animated Boating Knots

These animated knots are primarily for boaters, but many are useful for anyone who uses rope and values safety.

The selection of knots is based on many years of sailing combined with feedback and advice from several helpful captains. The knots are arranged in alphabetical order.

The commission’s authority includes all matters relating to or affecting the use of Lake Wylie and its shoreline area within all three counties up to 1,000 feet from the full pond level of 575 feet. This also includes all islands and peninsulas extending into the waters of Lake Wylie. This authority is limited and is subject to all provisions of law and may not conflict with special acts or regulations in state or federal government agencies.

Windy

Windy.com is a great weather resource for cruising. Don't ignore the official NOAA site but Windy offers a much more granular look at the weather. NOAA forecasts cover large areas over many hours with wind speeds expressed in big ranges (10 knots or more). Windy allows you to pan and zoom to the area you’ll be traveling, and to step through the forecast (several forecasts, actually) in one-hour increments.
